MILK & SUGAR
Milk and sugar are two staple items that most people have in their homes, milk is the useful base product and sugar adds a bit of sweetness to otherwise bland foods. That's how I see the Milk & Sugar merchandise, they are staple base items for any home, that have added flare in the clever and colourful design! The brand has a very youthful and fresh feeling to it. This concept feeds down into their stores and products.
Milk & Sugar is a lifestyle and home wares company based in Melbourne, Victoria. They launched their first tableware product range in Feb 2009 and have since expanded into all facets of home ware and living accessories, including; bedding, cushions, lighting, serving ware, timber boards, clocks, doormats, pots and even wash bags.. plus much more! They pride themselves on creating simple, well-designed items that don't break the bank (I like the sounds of that!!!).
I discovered Milk & Sugar's Fitzroy store while strolling Brunswick Street one day and knew I had struck gold, once their Prahran store opened just up the road I was even more excited! I personally have a few of their products in my apartment (as pictured in the 'A peak into my home' post).
They are the perfect pop of colour and add personality to my home!
I'm super excited to be able to share images of their new ranges in this post and am defiantly looking forward to getting my hands on as much of it as possible :)
I chatted to Cameron from Milk & Sugar and asked him the five H&W Loves questions.

What inspired you to begin this venture and what has been the biggest surprise?
"One thing behind our drive to create Milk & Sugar was our desire to find nice things for our own home. We struggled finding nicely designed and thought out pieces that were affordable and attainable. Obviously there are many gorgeous things out there, but often they come with a hefty price tag. So we started designing a range of tableware items and met with manufacturers who would bring our product dreams to reality.
The biggest surprise is the change of direction Milk & Sugar has had over the years. When starting out, we originally focused entirely on tableware; things like dinnerware, ceramics and glassware. Cooking and entertaining has always been a passion of ours so we thought that would be a good place to start. However, over the years we’ve seen a change in direction to homewares as well; cushions and textiles, lighting, ceramics, clocks, the list goes on. Today, Milk & Sugar is more a lifestyle brand and this is not necessarily what we had in mind all those years ago and it only came about by us trying new things, experimenting and putting ourselves out there. We’re happy where we’ve ended up though, as covering many product categories is more interesting for us and keeps us on our toes!"
How would you describe your company’s aesthetic/vision?
"This is a hard one to answer, as our inspiration comes from everywhere. One thing we all agree on at Milk & Sugar HQ is the fact that we like our products to be simple. By that I mean that we don’t like to overcomplicate things and overdesign or over engineer our products. They have to be functional, useful, well priced and good quality. We design many things that don’t ever see the light of day because they might not adhere to the before mentioned points. As far as inspiration and our aesthetic goes, I personally love Scandinavian design and I’d say that some of our aesthetic comes from there. We often use light timbers, pastel colours and Scandinavian simplicity when coming up with new product ideas. I must say though that most of our inspiration comes from colour. We design our whole range around colours and we love experimenting with it. At the start of every collection we select a colour palette and from there, the ideas start flowing. Colour is the most important aspect to us."
Picking a business name is one of the toughest decisions, how did you select yours and what is the meaning behind it?
"I’m afraid our story about our name is probably somewhat boring and uninspiring! In the early days we were just sitting around thinking about names that sounded good – we wanted something that rolled off the tongue, was easy to remember and something that didn’t necessarily pigeon hole us. Peter blurted out “Milk & Sugar” and it stuck."
What advice would you give to your younger-self?
"There’s so many bits of advice I’d give my younger self, we could be here all day.
I would say to always trust your gut instinct, it is always right. Never has my gut instinct been wrong about something to do with this business and it took me a while to actually take that into account when making decisions."
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
"Stockholm! I’ve been dying to visit for ever and it’s number one on my list of places to go. I’ve been lucky enough to travel quite extensively and work certainly takes us to some interesting places, but I’m yet to cross Stockholm off my list. There’s something about that Scandinavian style that has interested me for years."
